When are winter tyres compulsory in Czechia?
From 1 November to 31 March, a passenger car must use winter tyres when the road is covered by a continuous layer of snow, ice or frost, or when such conditions can be expected during the journey. On roads marked with the Winter Equipment sign, follow the sign and any supplementary panel. In practice, it is sensible to arrange the change before the weather deteriorates.
Why not wait for the first frost?
As temperatures fall, tyre compounds behave differently and morning conditions may differ from those in the afternoon. Booking early also reduces the risk of waiting for an appointment during the first cold days. Outdoor temperature alone is not the only legal criterion; actual or expected winter conditions are what matter.
What is the minimum tread depth?
On passenger vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, winter tyres must have at least 4 mm of tread in the main grooves. Check the depth in several places on each tyre because wear may be uneven. Also inspect for cracks, bulges, sidewall damage and tyre age.
What should be checked when changing wheels?
During a tyre change, check the correct size and condition, direction of rotation, mounting surfaces, wheel tightening and pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Cars with tyre-pressure monitoring may also require a TPMS check or reset. After a short drive, watch for vibration, pulling to one side or warning messages.
When can balancing or wheel alignment help?
Vibration at a particular speed is often linked to wheel imbalance or a damaged rim or tyre. If the car pulls to one side, the steering wheel is off-centre or the tyres wear unevenly, the suspension should be checked first and the alignment adjusted according to the findings.
