Signs of incorrect headlight alignment
Typical signs include a short beam range, an uneven light pattern or frequent flashes from oncoming drivers. One headlight clearly pointing differently from the other is also suspicious. Before inspection, clean the lenses and check the manual headlight-level control is in the correct position according to the vehicle handbook.
A wall check has its limits
On level ground, a light-coloured wall can help you compare the approximate height and shape of both beam patterns. This does not replace measurement: the correct aim depends on the lamp design, mounting height and manufacturer data. Do not turn the adjustment screws blindly without the correct procedure.
When alignment alone is not enough
A blurred cut-off, weak output or different light colours may be caused by a cloudy or damaged lens, an incorrectly seated bulb, moisture inside the lamp or an electrical fault. On vehicles with automatic levelling, ride-height sensors, linkages, wiring or the system's basic setting may also be involved.
When to have the headlights checked
A check makes sense after replacing a headlamp or light source, repairing the front of the car, carrying out suspension work or whenever the beam suddenly changes. It is also useful before the Czech technical inspection and before a season of frequent night driving. Correctly aimed, clean headlights help you see without needlessly dazzling others.
How a workshop checks the fault
The vehicle is prepared under the prescribed conditions and the headlamp condition and mounting, tyres and level control are checked. The beam pattern is measured with a headlight aimer and adjusted to the data for the specific vehicle. Adaptive LED or xenon systems may also require diagnostics and a basic-setting procedure specified by the manufacturer.
What to include when booking
Tell us the make, model, year and headlight type if known. It also helps to say whether a headlamp, bulb, bumper or suspension component was recently replaced and whether the problem appeared suddenly. At MotPro in Prague 9 we first verify the cause and agree the next steps with you in advance.
Every vehicle and fault is different. This article provides general guidance; an inspection of the specific vehicle determines the correct procedure.
