How performance loss manifests itself
The car may accelerate slowly, not respond normally to the gas, jerk under load or have limited revs. Sometimes a check engine light or other warning light comes on at the same time. It is important to note whether the problem arose suddenly, appears only after warming up, only during sharp acceleration, or lasts from the start.
What does safe mode mean?
The control unit can limit power when a fault is detected to reduce the risk of further damage and allow safe exit from the hazardous area. Specific behavior varies by car and defect. Shutting down and restarting may temporarily hide the limitation, but will not remove its cause or the stored fault record.
The most common causes
Loss of power can be caused by defects in the air supply or boost pressure, fuel system, ignition, sensors or wiring. For diesel cars, it may also be related to the EGR, DPF or SCR system. Therefore, the same manifestation does not mean the same defective part, and replacing the turbo, valve or sensor without verification may be unnecessary.
What to note before visiting the service center
For diagnosis, information about the speed, revolutions and temperature of the engine at the time of the fault, about the lights on and whether the problem appeared after refueling, repair or a longer drive will help. If it's safe to do so, take a picture of the dashboard message. Do not erase error codes yourself, as they may contain important information about the conditions of the failure.
When to stop and stop driving
Stop safely and shut off the engine if the red oil pressure or coolant warning light comes on, the engine overheats, knocks heavily, smokes heavily, leaks fluid, or smells fuel or burning. A careful short distance can only be considered if the manual of the specific car allows it, there are no dangerous signs and the car can be safely controlled. When in doubt, towing is more appropriate.
How does a proper diagnosis work?
It begins with a conversation about the manifestation of the defect and loading the memory of the control units. However, the error code alone may not identify the faulty part, so live data is compared and pressure, power, wiring, suction tightness or other values are measured as needed. It may also include an inspection on a jack or a test drive. Only then does it make sense to propose a specific fix.
