First describe exactly when the vibration occurs

Note whether the car shakes only after a cold start, also when warm, with the air conditioning on, or when D or R is selected. In a manual car, compare the symptom with the clutch pedal released and pressed. Fluctuating revs, an engine warning, smells, smoke and changes under light throttle also matter. These differences help separate rough engine operation from normal vibration being transmitted into the body.

When the engine runs unevenly

Fluctuating revs, misfiring and shaking may involve ignition, fuel delivery, the intake, sensors or engine management. On a diesel, injection and other systems specific to that engine are also checked. A fault code can point in a direction but does not confirm a failed part; live data and targeted measurements are needed.

When the revs are steady but the body shakes

If the engine holds steady revs, vibration may be transmitted through the engine or gearbox mounts. It may change when a gear is selected, the air conditioning starts or the revs are raised briefly. Replacing mounts by feel alone is unreliable because uneven combustion or play in the drivetrain can feel similar.

What the clutch and automatic gearbox can reveal

In a manual car, note whether vibration or noise changes when the clutch is pressed; this may direct the inspection toward the clutch mechanism, dual-mass flywheel or gearbox. With an automatic, it matters whether shaking begins only after selecting D or R and whether shifts are smooth. The exact fault cannot be identified without checking the gearbox type and operating data.

When to switch off the engine and not drive

Switch off the engine and do not continue if the engine warning flashes, the engine shakes violently, you smell fuel or burning, see smoke, hear strong metallic knocks or a red warning appears. Misfiring can damage the catalytic converter, while continuing with mechanical noise can worsen the fault. If in doubt, arrange recovery.

How diagnosis works at MotPro

We first compare cold and warm operation, engine speed, air-conditioning load and, depending on the vehicle, clutch or gearbox position. We read fault memory and live data and inspect ignition, intake, fuel delivery and powertrain mounts according to the symptoms found. Only after confirming the cause do we propose a repair and agree its scope with you in advance.
